My Brother’s in Thailand, Blogging!

Hello my little Demons (it’s a new thing I’ve started, just roll with it…)

So, I was thinking about writing another blog post today, and I was wondering what to write about, Part 2 on my Australia blog? Blog about my books? Write a book review? Or maybe another chapter of one of my books?

But then I realised I should probably give my brother a helping hand. He’s recently set up a blog himself, a travel blog (he’s the reason why I decided to start a Travel Blog section myself) and I know how difficult it is to get traffic through on a website/blog/etc so this is a shout out to my brother!

Here’s the link to his blog:

A Krabi Life

Currently he’s blogged about best places to see in Krabi, religious sites, hidden gems and the best time of year to go, and I’m looking forward to seeing more soon!

He also has a Facebook page and an instagram account, both updating on blog posts and posting pictures of Thailand (I’m not jealous, honest!)

We both have a love of travelling, having been to Thailand a number of times with our parents, and my brother having going back a few times since we’ve outgrown our family holidays.

He has since met a lovely girl out there and has decided to move there!

Krabi is a beautiful area of Thailand. I’ve been to a few places in Thailand; Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, and Krabi was definately the prettiest I’ve been too. I mean, just look at this photo (my brother’s photo):

Also, if you’re in the area (Ao Nang, Krabi), check out the N-Joy Bar, it’s owned by my brother’s friends and currently managed by his girlfriend Khai, who also has a coffee shop just outside called “Khai’s Coffee”.

I’m looking forward to the day I can afford to go back out and visit my brother and Thailand again!

Tired today, the rejection took it out of me…

…I think I need time to recoop and recover.

Yesterday, I got my first rejection letter. If you’ve not seen my previous blog post, read it here.

And although, at the time, it didn’t bother me, as I was expecting rejection, so it wasn’t too much of a surprise… I have however, had a few bad days with my writing now.

First, the fail with the Watty Awards 2018 knocking my confidence, then this rejection letter… and to make matters worse, I don’t have a lovely large support network. To keep it brief; a lot of my friends have drifted away from me since I have moved away (literally moved to the other side of the country!) and as such, I don’t have a large support network of friends and family picking me back up again. So, I have to pick myself up, just takes a bit longer.

Anyway, today, I am exceptionally tired. And, I think it’s because of the last few days of negativity.

Current mood:
6098-1

On the plus side, I read through a ‘favourite’ chapter of mine from my book; Rose Garden Sanatorium last night, before I went to bed, to cheer me up a little (as well as watching 2 Guns for a bit!) and I was surprised with myself at how well I had written it. Perked me up a little.

I’m also planning on looking into a few new ideas on marketing myself and my work a bit more. Using Instagram more (if it would work for me, currently not working on my mobile!), blogging more, might even look at submitting a short story.

Or… I might just take a break. When my Master’s Degree starts in October, I don’t think I’m going to have much time for anything other than university work and working part-time!

*Wishes on a miracle*

I got paid to Blog using Steemit!

If you’ve been following my blog, you may have noticed that I also mention Steemit a few times.

That’s because I blog on Steemit. And I get paid to do it.

Without getting into too much detail about the ins and outs, let me just explain that it’s a cryptocurrency blog. At the moment, a lot of people are on there who are crypto-geeks. I’m not. But I’m trying to get with the new trend as I believe it’s going to be the new brilliant thing.

You basically blog and people can upvote if they like the blog, which is where you earn money. The most upvotes, the more chance of getting money.

You also have a chance of getting a payout on upvoting blogs yourself. If you upvote on a blog that eventually does really well, expect a small cut of that.

Anyway, after finally getting my CoinBase account sorted (where I convert the cryptocurrencies into Sterling) I converted a small chunk of my earnings the other day and look what has finally gone into my account:

coinbase

That’s right, I have made (from a small chunk of what’s still in my account) £108 already!

The first £6 was a small payment (and a returned fee for verifying a bank account with CoinBase) and the second, was 100% earnings from Steemit!

Check out my account here and get set up: https://steemit.com/@penny-rose

Getting my head around WordPress…

So, I’ve been using WordPress for about a year now (I think I got a notification to say happy anniversary or something) and I’m still baffled by the thing!

I’ve mostly been using it as a blog, and set up a Wix account to use as my main website. But I see everywhere that WordPress is the biggest website host… so I’ve been dabbling in trying to understand it a bit more.

So, because I have all these posts, some posts are about my book; Rose Garden Sanatorium, others about my other book; It’s My Mistake. I have posts about author problems, I have posts about other crap too.

But can I arrange them into sections? Apparently not. There is a function in the ‘customize’ view to list a navigation, so to begin with I just added posts to that navigation, updating it frequently for my audience.

Then I realised I can add layers to it. So a page can have posts attached to it. So I thought that was brilliant, I can create a page for my Rose Garden Sanatorium book, another for my ‘It’s My Mistake’, and so on. But I can’t seem to have more than two posts per page and for some reason I have random pages turning up where it doesn’t show on the customise section.

And don’t even get me started on reaching people! Tags and categroies doesn’t seem to do anything for me!

Anyway, that’s my little rant over with… Might need to do some research into utilizing WordPress and maying do some training or something. Hopefully Udemy has something helpful!

Earn money being a Smashwords affiliate!

Any book lovers, bloggers, reviewers, authors, writers (or anyone for that matter) want to earn money being a Smashwords affiliate?

All you need is a Smashwords account and a PayPal account!

I just came across an article today that explains how you can earn money by just promoting books! I thought it was a brilliant way to help authors get their work out there, by offering promoters a small cut of the profits!

Imgur

So, for example, promote my own book and you could get 11% (going up to 15% soon!) of each sale you helped get!
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/744287
(for advice on how to do this, keep reading! You need to set up an account with Smashwords and give out a special link for it to work!)
(P.S. My book is now currently on sale, 50% off! Was $1.99 now only $1.00 for a short time. Ends 16th October!)

So, that means, if you share a link and someone buys that book from that link, not only does the author get a cut of the sales but so do you!

All you need; a Smashwords accound and a PayPal account!

How do you do set up and earn?

First, sign up to Smashwords!
Here’s the link: https://www.smashwords.com/signup

  1. Sign up for a FREE Smashwords membership!
  2. Click on the hyperlink to activate your Smashwords membership
  3. Go to your ‘Account Page’
  4. Follow the ‘Affiliate System Management’ link
  5. Click on the ‘Affiliate Marketers’ sign-up button
  6. Read the Terms of Service agreement and click to join the program

It’s that easy to set up!
Next, you want to promote some books to start earning. Read on, to learn how to do this.

Promote and earn!

Once you’re Smashwords account has been created, all you have to do is copy and paste the special link on the webpage!

For example, my own referral link is: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/744287?ref=PennyRose88

Your own link will be similar, but instead of ‘PennyRose88’ it will have your own username. E.g. if you’re user name is ‘JohnSmith’ then the referral link will be: ‘[…]books/view/744287?ref=JohnSmith’

This can be found at the bottom of the book page, like this:
Imgur

I have suggested you get a PayPal account and link that, only reason is, you do not have to wait for a certain amount to be in your account before you get paid. So, there is no waiting until you’ve got $50 in your Smashwords account before you get paid. If you use a PayPal, payment gets to you every month, minimum is $0.01!
(This information is true as an author, this information MIGHT be different for an affiliate, so please check terms and conditions first!)

I’m forever grateful for those who promote/support my books! Marketing it the hardest part of being a self-published author. But what better way doing it, by getting paid to do it!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

My Normal: A short story, By Penny Hooper

Rose Garden Sanatorium: Prologue

It’s My Mistake: Chapter One

To Blog or Not to Blog, That’s the Question

I’ve been having difficulty actually motivating myself to write a blog, it’s not been easy. I think, personally, the reason why it’s not been easy, is because I don’t get a lot of ‘traffic’ through it. But then, if I don’t blog, I don’t get traffic.

I’ve been using Twitter a lot recently though, and at first, it has been brilliant, I love making new connections, even go as far as new friends, meet new authors, learn a few things along the way. But, in terms of actually marketing my work, it’s not been the ‘best’ place to go.

You may plug and plug at your book, but at the end of the day, most of the people on there, are authors in a similar situation as you are! So, why would any author want to actually buy your book, when they’re trying to sell theirs?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to buy each and every one of their books, and if I ever get recognised, I probably will, just to help them out! But I can’t right now, I don’t have a job, I haven’t got a lot of money coming in (literally only £300+ a month, which I’ve been saving as much as I can to buy a car!) and I’m not sure I have an awful lot of time reading while I’m doing everything else anyway.

So, I’ve had to put myself aside and give myself a darn good talking to. Right, Penny, it’s time to go back to the drawing board. And, yes, I’ve come up with a few ideas, one of which, is that I have decided to publish ‘It’s My Mistake’ on Smashwords, so that’s currently going through another review. But so far, that’s been a good idea, I’ve already had one sale on there, it only went up yesterday!

But the other idea is to blog more!

Now, I have been blogging already, on this new and upcoming site called Steemit (I will blog about this a bit more later) where you actually can earn writing on it! I gave it a go after a good friend of mine suggested it, and it’s been good so far. In fact, I’ve earnt a little bit of money on it! (How to cash out on that money is another question! Still trying to work that one out, but it is possible! It’s just cryptocurrencies, I’m a noob!) And it’s also given me motivation to blog more.

At first, when I realised I was getting more people interested in that – well, they would, they get a cashout if they like/comment on a post themselves! I realised, hey, I can just use Steemit!

But, it’s still new, so not everyone knows Steemit! So, I have decided to push a bit more on Word Press, maybe even write posts like I have on Steemit and see where it goes.

So watch this space! I may very well blog about Steemit itself, if you are interested in knowing more about how to earn money writing (I think I’ve earnt nearly $400 worth of Steem Dollars, which is about the same as US dollars, but don’t quote me on that!) I will also be blogging about my books! Maybe even a sneaky chapter or two!

Thanks for reading! Have a lovely weekend everyone!
